Instagram auto DM: how keyword-triggered DMs work (and a setup checklist)

How Instagram auto DMs work: keyword triggers from comments, DMs and Story replies, Meta's rules, a setup checklist and fixes when a DM doesn't send.

An Instagram auto DM is a direct message sent automatically when someone does something specific: they comment a keyword, send you a DM containing a keyword, or reply to your Story. You've seen it as "Comment GUIDE and I'll send you the link." When it's set up well, people get what they asked for in seconds and you don't have to copy and paste the same link a hundred times.

When it's set up badly, people comment and get nothing, get the wrong message, or get two messages. This guide explains how keyword-triggered DMs actually work, what Meta's rules allow, and gives you a checklist you can follow on your next post.

The three triggers behind every Instagram auto DM

Almost every auto DM setup uses one of three entry points. Each one starts with an action the person takes. That's why they fit within Meta's messaging rules, while cold mass DMs don't.

1. Comment keyword → DM (comment to DM)

Someone comments a keyword on a specific post or Reel. Your automation sends them a private reply in DMs, and can also post a short public reply under their comment.

Meta calls the DM part a Private Reply. The rules that matter most:

  • One private reply per comment. Make that first message complete.
  • It's generally available for up to 7 days after the comment (see Meta's Private Replies documentation).
  • Once the person replies to your DM, a normal conversation opens and you can follow up within the standard messaging window.

This is the most popular auto DM because it turns public interest into a private conversation.

2. DM keyword → auto reply

Someone sends you a DM with a keyword such as PRICE, MENU or BOOK. Your automation answers straight away with the right information, a link or a button.

Because the person messaged you first, you can reply. Meta's messaging API documentation describes the window as generally 24 hours from their last message for most automated messages.

3. Story reply → auto DM

Someone replies to your Story (for example "YES" after a "Reply YES for the checklist" Story). A Story reply arrives as a DM, so your automation can respond in the same thread. Some tools also respond to Story mentions.

What isn't an Instagram auto DM (via the official API)

  • DMing everyone who follows you. A follow on its own doesn't open a messaging window through Meta's official API.
  • DMing people who liked a post or people on a list you bought or scraped.
  • Tools that log in with your password and click around like a person. These break Instagram's terms and put the account at risk.

How keyword matching works

The keyword is where most auto DMs fail, so it's worth getting right.

Exact match vs contains

  • Exact match fires only if the whole comment or message is the keyword ("GUIDE"). It's precise, but it misses "guide please!".
  • Contains fires if the keyword appears anywhere ("can I get the guide 🙏"). It catches more people, but common words can cause false triggers. A keyword like "price" can fire on "the price is too high".

For comment-to-DM, contains with a distinctive keyword usually works best.

Choose keywords people will actually type

  • Short and distinctive: GUIDE, RECIPE, PDF, SIZE, TOUR. Avoid everyday words like "yes", "info" or "link" on posts where people chat a lot, unless that post exists only for the CTA.
  • One word, no spaces. "FREE GUIDE" gets typed as "freeguide", "free-guide" and "guide free".
  • Plan for case and typos. Most tools ignore capitals, but add obvious variants (GIUDE, GUIDES) if your tool lets you list several.
  • Emoji keywords (🔥, 📩) can work, but test them. Phones sometimes send different emoji variants.
  • Multilingual audiences: if you post for the US, UK and Brazil, add the local word as well (GUIDE and GUIA).

One keyword per post (usually)

Using a different keyword per post makes analytics clear and avoids sending the wrong link. If you reuse a keyword across posts, make sure each post's rule sends the right content.

Anatomy of a good auto DM

Keep the first message short and complete, because with Private Replies it may be the only message you can send unless they reply.

  1. Context: "Hey! You asked for the 5-day meal plan 👋"
  2. The thing: the link, a button or the answer
  3. One next step: "Reply MORE if you'd like the shopping list too" (this invites a reply, which opens the conversation)
  4. A human option: "Or reply HUMAN and someone from the team will jump in"
  5. Optional disclosure: Meta recommends letting people know when they're talking to an automated experience. A short line such as "(this is an automated reply 🤖)" is enough.

Public reply (if you use one): keep it varied and short, for example "Sent! Check your DMs 📩" or "On its way, check Requests if you don't follow us." Several rotating variations look more natural than fifty identical replies.

Setup checklist: Instagram auto DM in 12 steps

Copy this into your notes and tick each item off.

Before you build

  1. ☐ Your Instagram account is a professional account (Business or Creator) and is connected through Meta's official login. No password is shared with the tool.
  2. ☐ You've picked one post or Reel for the first test, ideally one that already gets comments.
  3. ☐ You've chosen one distinctive keyword and its common variants.
  4. ☐ The link works on mobile and has a UTM tag, so you can see the traffic in analytics.

Building the rule

  1. ☐ Trigger: comments on that post containing the keyword (not "all posts" for your first test).
  2. ☐ Public reply: two or three short variations.
  3. ☐ DM: context + link or button + one next step + human option.
  4. ☐ Handover: a keyword such as HUMAN that pauses automation for that conversation and notifies the team.

Before you go live

  1. ☐ Test from a second account that doesn't follow you. Check that the DM arrives (it may land in Requests).
  2. ☐ Test a typo, lowercase text and the keyword inside a sentence.
  3. ☐ Put the keyword in the caption, on screen in the first seconds and in a pinned comment.

After launch

  1. ☐ Check the inbox daily for the first three days, then review weekly: which keywords triggered, how many people replied to the DM, and which questions needed a human.

Troubleshooting: "my auto DM didn't send"

Symptom Likely cause Fix
Nobody gets a DM Rule is attached to the wrong post, or it's paused Check the post selection and that the rule is on
Some people get nothing Their comment didn't match (spacing, typo, a different word) Switch to "contains" and add variants
Tester says "no DM" It's in Requests because they don't follow you Ask them to check Requests, and say so in your public reply
Old comments ignored Comment is older than the Private Reply window, or was made before the rule existed Ask them to comment again, or reply manually
Second message fails Only one private reply is allowed per comment Ask for a reply in the first DM ("Reply MORE…")
Duplicate DMs Two tools or two rules on the same post Keep one active rule per post and keyword
Link not clickable Formatting or link shortener issue Use a button or a full https:// link and test it on mobile

Where AutoPilotDM fits

AutoPilotDM is built around these three triggers. You choose the post or Reel and keyword for comment to DM, write the optional public reply, set up DM keyword auto replies and welcome messages, and add Story reply automation. It also covers rule-based FAQ answers, lead forms, CTA buttons, human handover and analytics by trigger. You review every message before it goes live and can pause any rule at any time.

To see each piece, start with Instagram comment to DM automation and Instagram DM automation. The Instagram automation guide covers the wider strategy.

FAQ

Is Instagram auto DM allowed?

Yes, when it goes through Meta's official API and responds to something the person did: a comment, a DM or a Story reply. Mass cold DMs and password-based bots aren't allowed and can put the account at risk.

Can I auto DM people who comment on old posts?

Private Replies are generally available for up to 7 days after a comment. For older comments, reply manually or ask people to comment again on a new post.

How many DMs can I send per comment?

One private reply per comment. If the person replies, the conversation opens and you can continue within the messaging window, so it's worth ending your first DM with a question.

Why do some people say they didn't receive my auto DM?

The most common reason is that the message went to their Requests folder because they don't follow you. Mention "check Requests" in your public reply. The next most common reason is a keyword mismatch.

Should I use the same keyword on every post?

Usually not. A unique keyword per post or campaign keeps analytics clear and makes sure the right link goes out. You can reuse evergreen keywords (like MENU) if every rule sends the same content.

Bottom line

An Instagram auto DM works when it's triggered by the person, matched to a keyword they'll actually type, and complete in its first message. Start with one post and one keyword, test from a non-follower account, and review results weekly before you scale. If you'd like to try it with AutoPilotDM, eligible workspaces can start a 7-day trial from the pricing page.
