How to send automatic DMs to new Instagram followers (what Meta actually allows)
Can you auto-DM new Instagram followers? What Meta's messaging API allows, ice breakers, comment-to-DM and how to greet people without cold outreach.
"Send an automatic DM whenever someone follows me" is one of the most common requests from creators and small businesses. It sounds simple. Meta's Instagram Messaging API does not work that way.
This guide explains what the official documentation allows, what it does not, and the practical patterns that still feel like a welcome — without risking your account on a cold broadcast.
The short answer
Under Meta's Instagram Messaging API, your app can only send a message after the Instagram user has messaged you first (or after you send a private reply to their comment, which is a separate feature). Following your account alone does not open a messaging window.
Meta's Send Messages documentation states that conversations begin when an Instagram user sends a message to your professional account, and that your app can reply only after that happens, within the standard messaging window (generally 24 hours for most actions). See Meta's Send Messages guide for the current wording.
So if a tool promises "auto-DM every new follower the moment they hit Follow," ask how it connects. Password-based scrapers and unofficial clients are a different (and risky) category. Tools that use Meta's official Graph API cannot cold-message people who only followed you.
What "welcome DM" usually means in practice
People say "welcome DM" when they mean one of four different things:
- Cold DM on follow — message fires because someone followed. Not supported by the official Messaging API.
- Ice breakers — suggested questions shown when someone opens your inbox, so they start the chat. Supported.
- Keyword auto-reply after they DM you — they message first; your tool answers with a welcome script. Supported inside the messaging window.
- Private reply to a comment — they commented on your post/Reel; you send one private DM tied to that comment. Supported under Private Replies rules.
Only options 2–4 are aligned with Meta's documented messaging model. Option 1 is what most "new follower auto-DM" pitches imply — and it is the one you should treat with caution.
Pattern A: Ice breakers (they start, you answer)
Ice breakers let you show up to four suggested questions when someone opens a conversation with your professional account. When they tap one, your app receives a postback and can reply.
That is the closest official equivalent to a "welcome menu":
- Keep questions short: "Pricing", "Book a call", "Shipping", "Menu".
- Each answer should do one job and offer a human handoff.
- Ice breakers are not a broadcast. Nobody gets messaged until they choose a question or type something.
Example welcome reply after someone taps "Shipping":
Thanks for asking. UK orders usually arrive in 2–4 working days. Want the full shipping page? Reply YES and I'll send the link — or ask anything specific and a human will pick it up.
Pattern B: Keyword welcome after their first DM
Once someone messages you, the standard messaging window opens. Meta documents that for most user actions this window lasts 24 hours, and that for some Click-to-Direct ad first messages it may last longer (up to 7 days from that message). Always check the live docs for the action you rely on.
Inside that window you can:
- Send a short welcome that confirms who they are talking to.
- Disclose automation when required (Meta notes disclosure is especially important for California and German users, and recommends it as best practice even when not legally required).
- Route common keywords (PRICE, HOURS, LINK) to helpful replies.
- Hand off to a person for anything sensitive.
A simple first-message welcome:
Hi — thanks for messaging {brand}. I'm the automated helper for quick questions. For anything personal, type HUMAN and someone on the team will take over. What do you need today?
That is an automatic DM in the useful sense: fast, clear, and triggered by their action.
Pattern C: Comment-to-DM instead of follow-to-DM
If your goal is "greet people who just discovered us," comment-to-DM is usually stronger than a follow trigger:
- They already engaged with a specific post or Reel.
- Meta's Private Replies feature lets you send one private message to a commenter, generally within 7 days of the comment (Live comments: only during the broadcast).
- After they reply to that private message, the normal messaging window applies for follow-ups.
Caption pattern that replaces "follow for a DM":
Comment GUIDE and we'll send the free checklist in your DMs.
You get a warmer lead, a documented API path, and a reason for the message that the person chose.

Pattern D: Story replies as the welcome door
Story replies are another intentional start. Someone taps to reply to your Story; that is a message from them. You can answer with a keyword flow (for example MENU, BOOK, LINK) and keep a human on complex questions. See Story reply automation for how that path is usually set up.
What about the Human Agent tag?
Meta's Human Agent feature lets a human reply outside the standard messaging window for up to 7 days after the user's message, for cases that need more time (weekend closures, complex issues). It is not a licence to automate cold outreach to new followers. Use it for delayed human support, not as a workaround for follow-triggered spam.
A practical welcome setup you can ship this week
- Write one honest welcome for first DMs (disclose automation lightly).
- Add 3–4 ice breakers that match real questions you already answer by hand.
- Pick one content CTA this week that uses comment-to-DM (guide, menu, price list, booking link).
- Define HUMAN / AGENT as the escape hatch in every automated reply.
- Log what people ask for two weeks, then turn the top three questions into better keywords — not into more aggressive outreach.
Tools such as AutoPilotDM are built around comment triggers, DM keyword replies, Story replies and human handoff — the patterns Meta's API is designed for — rather than cold follow blasts. Eligible workspaces can explore a 7-day trial on the pricing page.
FAQ
Can I automatically DM someone just because they followed me?
Not through Meta's official Instagram Messaging API. Messaging starts when the user messages you (or when you send an allowed private reply to their comment). Following alone does not open that window.
Are ice breakers the same as a welcome DM?
Not exactly. Ice breakers are suggested questions shown when someone opens your chat. The "welcome" message is what you send after they tap a question or type. Together they feel like a welcome flow without cold outreach.
Is comment-to-DM allowed?
Yes, as Private Replies: typically one private message per comment, within Meta's documented time limits, with follow-ups only after the person replies. Confirm details on Meta's Private Replies documentation, because product rules can update.
Do I need to say that a bot is replying?
Meta recommends informing people when they are in an automated experience, and notes legal disclosure requirements in some regions (including California and Germany as called out in the Send Messages docs). A short, clear line at the start of the thread is good practice everywhere.
What should I avoid?
Avoid tools that ask for your Instagram password to "DM all new followers," avoid buying follower lists, and avoid messaging people who never interacted. Stick to official API connections and conversations the user started.
Bottom line
Automatic DMs for new followers are mostly a marketing phrase. Automatic DMs for people who commented, replied to a Story, tapped an ice breaker or messaged you are real, documented and useful. Build the second kind, and your welcome will feel helpful instead of invasive.
